Spring cleaning should ideally happen throughout the year, but then it wouldn’t be called ‘spring’ cleaning, would it?
Come September in Singapore, it always feels as if I’m transitioning into another ‘season’—even though Singapore, with its equatorial climate, doesn’t have seasons and remains hot and wet year-round.
Perhaps what I mean is moving forward to another time period, where I feel an inherent need to declutter. This involves sorting through a vast archive of knowledge stored digitally, in ring files, handwritten notes on foolscap paper, and a couple of shelves of books—including the insidious creep of multiple e-books!
The quest for truth has become overwhelming, and it’s timely to bring some order to it.
A ‘space’ is fascinating: as we live, we often don’t realize we inhabit a ‘collective’ space. For example, in an office or home, it’s not fair to assume that just because someone’s belongings are in their personal space, they don’t affect others’ life spaces and energies.
‘Things’ consume our internal and external space and time to maintain, and they have a ‘hold’ on our energies. I always remind myself and others to be mindful of the possessions we own; they demand so much of our mental and emotional space. Perhaps it’s time to take stock of what we own, cherish the items we truly value, and quietly let go of those that need to embark on their own journeys.
